Everything is different, yet nothing has changed.
When I started wedding photography back in 2014 the equipment was so different with big heavy Dlsr cameras that need big heavy lenses to be able to get great photos. Couples expected to be "directed" when it came to getting their photos. I needed to use flash quite often to get good wedding photos, especially the "couple shots" where we'd go off to somewhere pretty at the reception and spend 20 minutes posing and staging photos.
Jump forward to this year, 2026; my cameras are barely bigger than your average smart phone, lenses are small enough to put in your pocket and I can shoot superb wedding photos in near darkness. As a result I do the bare minimum when it comes to "posing" as I want to capture the naturalness of the day. I want relaxed, real moments as they happen, not when I create them.
And then there's wedding couples;
time was when they'd seek out the "best wedding photography in Suffolk" to ensure their photos were good and they'd be looking for a wedding photographer with excellent reviews, years of experience and may awards won. Now, in 2026 that's history. Wedding couples are much more budget conscious and want a totally relaxed day with maybe only 20 minutes taken out of the day for group and family photos; the rest of the day they just want to enjoy it without a photographer interrupting to get staged and posed wedding photos.
For me this is great! I've never loved the posed couple shots and would much rather use my expertise to be in the right place at the right time with the right gear to get relaxed, natural photos of the couples wedding day.
So whilst many many things are different, it's still a couple getting married. It's still a love story that needs telling with photographs that capture the essence of their wedding day; the romance, the moments and tears and laughter.
